Your team's Claudes, one line above your prompt.
brainmod is a Claude Code mod (a plugin that runs inside Claude Code) for teams. It shows your teammates' live Claudes above your prompt: who, which repo and branch, and what each one is doing. If a teammate's Claude edited a file in the last 10 minutes and yours is about to edit it too, brainmod holds the edit and asks you first. It also keeps a personal brain of notes, synced across your machines.
Free during the beta. Works offline on one machine without an account. Never uploads prompts, transcripts or file contents.
Four small things inside the Claude Code you already use
Every Claude runs on its owner's own seat. brainmod shows what the others are doing and passes notes between people; it never routes work or usage from one person to another.
-
01The band
One line above your prompt with each teammate's live Claude: login, repo, branch and status (idle, thinking, running a tool, asking its person).
moreexpands it into cards with a 12×8 pixel critter per Claude whose hat ribbon is the session's colour and whose pose is its status. Each session checks in every 15 seconds; a Claude drops off the band 2 minutes after its last check-in.
idle thinking tool asking -
02The collision hold
Before your Claude edits a file, brainmod checks whether a teammate's Claude touched the same file in the same repository within the last 10 minutes. If so, the edit waits and you pick: Wait, Go anyway or Message them.
Files are compared as hashes, so it works even when nobody shares file paths. In headless runs (
claude -p) the edit is refused with a "file busy" result by default.# the window and the behaviour are yours to set holdMode ask | warn | off holdModeHeadless block | warn | off holdWindowMinutes 10 -
03Messages to a Claude, or the team
Send a short line to a teammate's Claude session or to a whole team. It shows up for the person on the other side, and their Claude sees it as context at the next turn they start.
A message never starts a turn, never runs a tool and never spends the receiver's usage. Up to 1,000 characters; kept 7 days.
/team msg @alice I'll take the totals, you keep the tax rounding /team msg all deploy freeze until 3pm

04A personal brain
Notes you or your Claude keep: a gotcha, a fix, a decision, tied to a repo and an area of it. They sync across your machines and come back to Claude when it works in that area again. A note goes to a team only when you promote it.
Up to 500 characters a note. Claude can post notes through the mod's tool; you see each one.
/brain note --kind gotcha --area packages/native/ Vitest needs --pool=forks here, threads hang on the native addon /brain promote n_4k2m platform
What leaves your machine, exactly
brainmod sends presence fields, notes you write or approve, and messages you send. Nothing else. Signed out, nothing is sent at all.
Sent, when you are signed in
- Presence, every 15 s per open session: a random session id, your machine name, repo name and branch, status (idle, thinking, tool name, asking).
- Hashes of files your Claude touched in the last 30 minutes, at most 30.
- File paths and the current edit target, only for repos you opt in with
sharedFiles. - Notes you or your Claude post, and messages you send.
- Your GitHub id, login, name and avatar, from sign-in (scope
read:user).
Never sent
- Prompts, transcripts or Claude's replies.
- File contents or diffs.
- Tool inputs beyond the tool's name.
- Your Claude credentials. brainmod has its own sign-in and token.
- File paths of repos you have not opted in. Those travel as hashes only.
A secret scanner on every note and message
Your machine scans each note and message before upload and refuses a match; the server scans again. It catches AWS access keys, GitHub and Slack tokens, Anthropic, OpenAI, Stripe and Google API keys, private key blocks, JWTs, brainmod tokens, and lines like password = ….
Short memory on the server
Presence expires minutes after a session ends. Messages are kept 7 days. Tokens and session cookies are stored hashed and expire after 90 days unused; you can revoke each one on your account page. Details in the privacy notice.
Install in Claude Code
brainmod is a Claude Code plugin with mod hooks. It needs Claude Code 2.1.287 or later, which added mods.
Not public yet
The marketplace that will carry brainmod is not published yet. <marketplace> below is a placeholder; this page will name it when it is live.
-
Add the plugin
/plugin install brainmod@<marketplace>Run it at the Claude Code prompt. The band appears at the next session.
-
Use it alone, right away
Without an account, the band shows your own other sessions on this machine, the hold works between them, and
/brain notekeeps notes locally. -
Sign in to see your team
/brain loginIt prints a code and opens this site's device page; sign in with GitHub and approve. Then
/team create Platformand/team invitefor a link to share.
Commands
All of them run at the Claude Code prompt. The docs list every option.
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
/brain | Opens the brain pane: your notes for this repo, recent team notes, who is online. |
/brain note <text> | Saves a note to your personal brain. --kind gotcha|fix|decision, --area <path>. |
/brain login | Signs this machine in with a device code, like gh auth login. |
/brain logout | Revokes this machine's token and goes back to local mode. |
/brain status | Shows the server, who you are signed in as, your teams and what this repo shares. |
/team | Lists your teams and the Claudes live in them right now. |
/team msg <@login|all|#team> <text> | Sends a short message to a teammate's Claude, or to a team. |

Questions
What is brainmod?
brainmod is a Claude Code mod (a plugin that runs inside Claude Code) for teams. It shows your teammates' live Claude sessions in a band above your prompt, holds an edit when a teammate's Claude touched the same file in the last 10 minutes, carries short messages between people's Claudes, and keeps a personal brain of notes synced across your machines.
Does brainmod upload my code or my prompts?
No. It never uploads transcripts, prompts, Claude's output or file contents. It sends presence fields (repo name, branch, status, hashes of touched files), notes you or your Claude post, and messages you send. File paths are sent only for repos you opt in with sharedFiles.
How does it know two Claudes are editing the same file without paths?
Each machine hashes the repository's remote URL and the file's repo-relative path. Two clones of the same remote produce the same hash for the same file, so the server can match them without ever seeing the path. Your own machine already knows which file you are about to edit.
Can a teammate's message make my Claude do something?
No. A message is shown to you, and your Claude sees it as untrusted context at the next turn you start. It never starts a turn, never runs a tool and never spends your usage.
Does it share my Claude usage with my team?
No. Each Claude runs on its owner's own seat. brainmod never routes work or usage from one person to another.
Do I need an account?
Not to use it alone. Signed out, brainmod works on one machine: the band shows your own other sessions, the hold works between them and notes stay local. Sign in with GitHub to see teammates and sync notes across machines.
Does it work in VS Code?
Partly. The band is drawn in the terminal and in the Claude Code Desktop app. The VS Code panel does not draw it, but the hooks still run there: the collision hold, notes and messages work.
What does brainmod cost?
brainmod is free during the beta.
